Service Module A key componenet to our programming is service. Service represents action, an important educational tool that demands participants engage with the problem in front of them. Though we will work to obtain the volunteering opportunities you request, we cannot guarantee any specific service location/type because we work with volunteer organizations' schedules that are often subject to change. There are two main types of service and volunteering that we arrange: direct and indirect service. Both fill important needs for the agencies we partner with and the people they aim to assist; one does not inherently provide a deeper and more influential experience than the other. Direct Service This involves providing service to individuals at an agency or site or in the community. Organizations we partner with that provide direct service include but are not limited to: S.O.M.E. (So Others Might Eat), Christian Community Group Homes, Community for Creative Non-Violence, New Horizons, and Thrive DC. These service opportunities provide face-to-face exposure with people you serve. Another direct service option is our Bread for the Journey Program. This simple activity, which encourages participants to step outside of their comfort zone, takes a few hours of your time and can be incorporated into any program. The group gathers and makes bagged lunches and delivers the food by walking to neighborhood parks where homeless individuals spend their days. The bagged lunches are not a mass-feeding opportunity, but an icebreaker to talk to someone one-on-one and get to know their story. This program represents an additional cost because groups are responsible for the food/toiletries. Indirect Service This involves serving at an agency doing behind-the-scenes assistance, not directly with the individuals the agency serves. Organizations we partner with that provide indirect service include but are not limited to: DC Central Kitchen, Capital Area Food Bank, Metro Teen AIDS, Washington Parks and People, and Food and Friends.
